Anti-war protesters get permit for GOP conventions

The Associated Press is reporting that the St Paul-based Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War will receive a permit for a large demonstration on September 1, 2008. The group has already been holding regular demonstrations and marches along their planned route with the hopes that a loop-hole in the city’s permitting laws will help them secure a permit sooner.

Here’s the story from AP:

ST. PAUL

A group planning an anti-war rally and march during this summer’s Republican National Convention has secured a permit for a demonstration at the state Capitol.

The so-named Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War told state officials they are expecting between 30,000 and 50,000 people at the Sept. 1 rally. It will be held on the opening day of the GOP nominating convention.

The state permit is only step one for the group. It still needs city permission to hold the march to the Xcel Energy Center, the site of the national convention.

St. Paul city officials won’t accept applications from protest groups until March 1.
